How to write a farewell letter with peace of mind

A farewell letter doesn't have to be sad. It can be a thank-you, a shared memory, or simply the words that were left unsaid.

Start with what you feel

Don't look for the perfect sentence. Write the way you'd talk to that person at the table. Honesty matters more than form.

A simple structure

  • Opening: use their name or the nickname you use.
  • A memory: a moment you shared and keep with you.
  • What you want them to know: gratitude, forgiveness, pride, love.
  • A wish: what you hope for their life.
  • Goodbye: a short line that is yours.

Sentence starters

  • "If you're reading this, I want you to know…"
  • "I never told you enough how much…"
  • "Do you remember the day when…"
  • "What I wish most for you is…"

Write without fear of early delivery

With The Last Message your letter stays stored. Every 30 days you confirm you're fine with one click. Only if you miss the reminder and the +2 and +3 day warnings is the letter sent. Rewrite it as often as you like.
